Lambing Time

Lambing occurs in March and April. Some years we lamb earlier. In spring 2026 we will have purebred Coopworth “blue” lambs and purebred Texel lambs from our new rams acquired in 2025.

Breeds

Coopworth – The Coopworth is known for its productivity and easy care characteristics. Ewes have very strong mothering instincts and are easy to manage. Multiple births are most common and the Coopworth ewe will provide an abundance of milk for her lambs. The lambs grow well on grass making this breed ideal for low-input, pasture-based systems. Rams are virile and settle the ewes quickly.

In 2025, we had a few lambs born from laparoscopic AI. We crossed Dutch Spotted with pure Texel and one Coopworth. This is a new breed to the farm.

Texel – The Texel breed today is a white-faced breed with no wool on the head or legs. The breed is characterized by a distinctive short, wide face with a black nose and widely placed, short ears with a nearly horizontal carriage. These sheep also have black hooves. Texel sheep have excellent temperaments. They are docile, easy to work around, and have a curious nature. They tend not to be easily excitable or nervous. The most outstanding feature of the Texel breed, however, is its remarkable muscle development and leanness. 

Flock Management

Our flock is considered a farm flock since they don’t leave our place and are grazed on our rotational pastures. The grass here is very rich in most nutrients (although deficient in selenium which we supplement) and lambs grow well. Meg, our livestock guardian dog, watches over the ewes day and night.
